Inspiration For Pencil Skirt

To trace the history of vintage pencil skirts, let’s rewind to 1908. Mrs Berg, the wife of an associate of Wright Brothers, was the first female aeroplane passenger. As her skirt was billowing when chains and propellers whirled and cranked, a rope was tied around her ankles in order to play safe. Thanks to media, Mrs Berg’s photographs were published everywhere and her style captured the attention of Paris designers. And thus was born the hobble skirt. Due to the hobble skirt’s shape, women had to walk gracefully and it created a wiggle in their walk.

Hobble Skirts Origins in the 1880s

The rage due to discomfort fizzled out soon but paved way for the pencil skirt. During WWI, because of the shortage of fabric, hemlines rose from floor length to ankle and then to calf length. And in 1940 Christian Dior created the pencil skirt, taking inspiration from the hobble skirt. Since then the figure hugging pencil skirt has found its fans in every women.
